With 1.4 billion people on Facebook and 900 million logging everyday you start to get an understanding why you need to be advertising on Facebook and that includes New Zealand, here are some stats to make you think:

·        2.5 million kiwis access Facebook each month

·        1.9 million New Zealanders access their account everyday with 1.5 million from mobile devices.

·        So the average daily for people visiting there account is 14 (unbelievable but true)!

That is from Facebook themselves so you see how active Facebook users are with 82% being mums and not surprisingly 91% are between 25-34 years old.

Facebook tracks and monitors everything there users do so as you can imagine for advertising your business it is fantastic. You can target very specific audiences especially if you already have an existing Facebook page for your business. You can use Facebook’s audience insights to see exactly what the people interested in your business do such as what they buy, their education, other pages they like, interests and behaviours, ages, demographics and the list goes on. There is no better way to really get to know your customer.

Once you really know your customer you can then tailor the ad to your customer increasing the likelihood that they will engage in your ad. Remember most users on Facebook want to be entertained so it is not good to advertise your offer directly. Be smart and provide something useful that relates to the customer and what you are selling. Use useful or entertaining content to make the connection between your ad and your offer.

The cost of Facebook ads depends on the quality of your ad and targeting. Facebook is trying to beat YouTube with the amount of video views so advertising videos are very cheap right now.

SEO tips for your website by Paul Randall

  Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is a curly area with it seems so many claims by experts how to get top rankings for your site that it appears to be very complicated. In reality it comes down to some fundamentals that all sites need.  

Below are some tips that will help your sites rankings.


The first item you need to determine is what the heck is your site really about? What are you trying to achieve? This is important because you need your website to stay on topic. Don’t confuse the search engines by having your sites content be vague on what it is about. Sure you can have varied categories and pages but they must all relate to your main topic somehow.  So the domain name keywords, categories, page titles and page content are of a similar theme.

2. Internal links

Spend some time in linking internal pages to each other for example links from your home page to internal pages when certain categories or products are mentioned in your home page content.

3. Site speed

Remove anything that is going to slow down your site. Google rewards and prefers fast loading sites which I think we all appreciate. So remove all those unnecessary plugins or scripts that slows down your site. You can test your site here: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/


4. Image seo

Set up your images correctly by renaming the image file names to keywords that describe the image. For example change 12345.jpg too seo-tips.jpg. Change the alt tab for your images to again reflect your sites topics. These images will all help you rank in the search engines.



When it comes to keywords make sure you mention your main topic where they can be easily seen. Site title, domain name, page categories and content. This makes it very clear to the search engines what your site is about.  Having that constant theme throughout your site helps the search engines show your site to your correct audiences. This can’t happen if search engines don’t know what your site is about or it get serves up to the wrong audience making your content irrelevant.


6. Update site

Keep you site updated regularly with new content. This is where a blog is handy where you can add new products or the latest industry news. Anything that is relevant to your audience and increases your sites visibility. Make sure you make the most of social links by posting the content to your social media sites. There are plenty of options for this to be done automatically such as www.iffttt.com or www.onywire.com as examples.


7. Site indexing

Is your site indexed in the search engines? To get your site indexed make sure you have a site map installed.  Go to   https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url?pli=1/ and submit your site. Add your site to webmaster tools and install google analytics (you want this for tracking). You can do the same with the other dominant search engines Yahoo and Bing


8. Website linking to you

Post good content on relevant blogs so you can add your url. Use the whole url not just the part starting with www. These inbounds links are super important for SEO however it does take time unless you pay for someone to do it.

Don’t be afraid to add a few links to other sites that are relevant to your audience and add value to your customers. This adds authority to your site telling Google that you can be trusted as a source of good content which is all the search engines want.


9. Content

Make sure your content is for humans and not robots. A few years ago SEO was about filling your content with keywords and you would rank. What the content actually said was irrelevant however now it is about writing for your audience. You still want to include your keywords but in a more natural way. You want humans to actually read and enjoy your content, stay on your site longer and then do what you want them to do such as call a number or buy from your store. So no spammy irrelevant content - go for quality and the search engines will reward you.


10. Mobile devices

This is crucial now with Google recognising that 70% of search traffic is coming from mobile devices. They are placing an ever increasing importance on sites that look great on all devices. Yes Mobilegeddon 2 is here (not it’s real name of course). Google has announced the effect of the mobile friendliness of your site will directly affect your ranking signal even more so than last years algorithm update. The emphasis is on your website being optimised to look great on smart phones. The fact that Google has actually announced an upcoming change is significant in itself, they rarely announce anything and just leave the experts involved in search engine optimisation guessing what happened to their site.


The good part is if your site is already mobile friendly then you are in a good position and will possibly rank even higher. Of course this only relates to searches via mobile phones, searches via desktop will be unaffected. The problem is according to recent studies 94% of Americans use their phones to search for local services and most of those searches occur while the person is at work or home so there is something to think about.
