What does that mean? Ever notice that in front of a website’s URL it often says, “http://”? Well now, Head Above The Crowds  responsive sites will have “https//” instead. SEO tips for your website by Paul Randall

  Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is a curly area with it seems so many claims by experts how to get top rankings for your site that it appears to be very complicated. In reality it comes down to some fundamentals that all sites need.  

Below are some tips that will help your sites rankings.

1.Topic

The first item you need to determine is what the heck is your site really about? What are you trying to achieve? This is important because you need your website to stay on topic. Don’t confuse the search engines by having your sites content be vague on what it is about. Sure you can have varied categories and pages but they must all relate to your main topic somehow.  So the domain name keywords, categories, page titles and page content are of a similar theme.

2. Internal links

Spend some time in linking internal pages to each other for example links from your home page to internal pages when certain categories or products are mentioned in your home page content.

3. Site speed

Remove anything that is going to slow down your site. Google rewards and prefers fast loading sites which I think we all appreciate. So remove all those unnecessary plugins or scripts that slows down your site. You can test your site here: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/

 

4. Image seo

Set up your images correctly by renaming the image file names to keywords that describe the image. For example change 12345.jpg too seo-tips.jpg. Change the alt tab for your images to again reflect your sites topics. These images will all help you rank in the search engines.

 

5.Keywords

When it comes to keywords make sure you mention your main topic where they can be easily seen. Site title, domain name, page categories and content. This makes it very clear to the search engines what your site is about.  Having that constant theme throughout your site helps the search engines show your site to your correct audiences. This can’t happen if search engines don’t know what your site is about or it get serves up to the wrong audience making your content irrelevant.

 

6. Update site

Keep you site updated regularly with new content. This is where a blog is handy where you can add new products or the latest industry news. Anything that is relevant to your audience and increases your sites visibility. Make sure you make the most of social links by posting the content to your social media sites. There are plenty of options for this to be done automatically such as www.iffttt.com or www.onywire.com as examples.

 

7. Site indexing

Is your site indexed in the search engines? To get your site indexed make sure you have a site map installed.  Go to   https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url?pli=1/ and submit your site. Add your site to webmaster tools and install google analytics (you want this for tracking). You can do the same with the other dominant search engines Yahoo and Bing

 

8. Website linking to you

Post good content on relevant blogs so you can add your url. Use the whole url not just the part starting with www. These inbounds links are super important for SEO however it does take time unless you pay for someone to do it.

Don’t be afraid to add a few links to other sites that are relevant to your audience and add value to your customers. This adds authority to your site telling Google that you can be trusted as a source of good content which is all the search engines want.

 

9. Content

Make sure your content is for humans and not robots. A few years ago SEO was about filling your content with keywords and you would rank. What the content actually said was irrelevant however now it is about writing for your audience. You still want to include your keywords but in a more natural way. You want humans to actually read and enjoy your content, stay on your site longer and then do what you want them to do such as call a number or buy from your store. So no spammy irrelevant content - go for quality and the search engines will reward you.

 

10. Mobile devices

This is crucial now with Google recognising that 70% of search traffic is coming from mobile devices. They are placing an ever increasing importance on sites that look great on all devices. Yes Mobilegeddon 2 is here (not it’s real name of course). Google has announced the effect of the mobile friendliness of your site will directly affect your ranking signal even more so than last years algorithm update. The emphasis is on your website being optimised to look great on smart phones. The fact that Google has actually announced an upcoming change is significant in itself, they rarely announce anything and just leave the experts involved in search engine optimisation guessing what happened to their site.

 

The good part is if your site is already mobile friendly then you are in a good position and will possibly rank even higher. Of course this only relates to searches via mobile phones, searches via desktop will be unaffected. The problem is according to recent studies 94% of Americans use their phones to search for local services and most of those searches occur while the person is at work or home so there is something to think about.

By now you realise how important it is to have your business on social media and that your approach to business on social media has to be different, due to the fact that good content is driven by the user.  So it is important to view all content from the eyes of your audience or customer.  If your audience thinks the post is important or interesting they will share it for you amongst their own networks.

In the past, retailers would only show their products or talk about products but now the game has changed.

If you are a retailer selling a product, people on social media networks don’t want products constantly promoted on your business Facebook page. However, they do like you giving tips about how to look after products they have bought from you, or tips on how to get the most out of a product.  Talk about a problem that is important to them, especially if the product was quite an investment for them.  As an example, if you sell cameras, give tips on how to take the best shot or even recommend courses that customers can take to improve their expertise.  If you sell Antiques you could give tips on how to look after and clean delicate objects.  Think from the customers’ point of view - if you were the customer what would you find interesting?

Don’t be afraid to personalise your page.  People relate to people so showing your staff doing their jobs, any special moments or surprises such as birthday parties can be put on your page.  Any interesting content from YouTube or other platforms can be easily shared on your page to make it interesting.

Facebook has a new service with Local Awareness Ad Campaigns. The difference with these campaigns are they are very specific to local business which is just fantastic. You can target people when they are near your business or if they live in your specified area.

 

The ads also increase your potential customers in engaging with your business by giving you the option of four “call to action” buttons that you can use in your ad

 

Send message- Customers can use Facebook's private message service directly from the news feed. Imagine how great it is for your customers to have such a personal response from the business owner.

 

Call now - The customer can call your business directly from the news feed by just using a button.

 

Get Directions - The customer's phone can show exactly where your business is ( not to much of a problem in Dannevirke)

If people are using the call now or get directions feature on your ad, you know they are keen on your offer. There is no better way to measure engagement and makes it easier to adjust your ad to get the best results.

I am a great fan of advertising. On a personal level you may hate ad breaks interrupting TV programmes and newspapers fulling up with ads, but they do serve an excellent purpose. Without advertising, your favourite newspaper would be much more expensive (or non-existent) and there would be no New Zealand made TV programmes. You would be a lot worse off - missing out on specials for products and never knowing about new services on offer.

On a business level, advertising is crucial for the survival of your business - without effective advertising, how will your customers know how you can help them?

 

A good advertisement must contain these elements to make them effective:

 

-      USP - unique selling point. What makes your product or service stand out from the competition?

-      An attention grabbing headline - crucial to get people to actually read your ad. You must think “what is going to grab my target audience's attention?” People see a lot of ads during the day so your headline has to stand out.

-      Make them an offer they can’t refuse. Think Client Lifetime Value. Your amazing offer may not provide you with the same profit margin but if it gets clients in the door and buying from you then the offer is worth it in the long run.

-      Talk about the benefits - no one really cares about your business or what you do. Customers want to know what you can do for them. Explain how a certain feature of your business benefits them.

-      Make your offer as risk free as possible - people are afraid of getting scammed so take away their fears by offering a risk free guarantee. This also gives you product credibility because it shows that you stand by your product or service.  

-      Make it seem urgent - for example, give your great offer an expiry date. This will encourage customers to act now and not put off to think about later.

-      Lastly, make sure you have a call to action - get the readers of your ad to do something. It might be “click here” or “call this number”. If the reader begins to action your request, you are halfway to a sale.

 

Remember to spread your advertising as far and wide as you can. Put your ads on your website, on social media and in print media. The more times people see your offer the better, so help your business and get advertising. With 1.4 billion people on Facebook and 900 million logging everyday you start to get an understanding why you need to be advertising on Facebook and that includes New Zealand, here are some stats to make you think:

·        2.5 million kiwis access Facebook each month

·        1.9 million New Zealanders access their account everyday with 1.5 million from mobile devices.

·        So the average daily for people visiting there account is 14 (unbelievable but true)!

That is from Facebook themselves so you see how active Facebook users are with 82% being mums and not surprisingly 91% are between 25-34 years old.

Facebook tracks and monitors everything there users do so as you can imagine for advertising your business it is fantastic. You can target very specific audiences especially if you already have an existing Facebook page for your business. You can use Facebook’s audience insights to see exactly what the people interested in your business do such as what they buy, their education, other pages they like, interests and behaviours, ages, demographics and the list goes on. There is no better way to really get to know your customer.

Once you really know your customer you can then tailor the ad to your customer increasing the likelihood that they will engage in your ad. Remember most users on Facebook want to be entertained so it is not good to advertise your offer directly. Be smart and provide something useful that relates to the customer and what you are selling. Use useful or entertaining content to make the connection between your ad and your offer.

The cost of Facebook ads depends on the quality of your ad and targeting. Facebook is trying to beat YouTube with the amount of video views so advertising videos are very cheap right now.

You have all heard about viruses and what they can do to your computer.  Unfortunately they are all true.  There are new viruses being created all the time and they are getting harder and harder to detect. Most viruses come in email messages. Some look like they come from a friend or from trusted institutions such as banks.  It is very easy to unknowingly download a malicious file. The places viruses can be attached to is becoming more sophisticated by the day.

You have to ask yourself the question – what are the consequences of not having antivirus software on your computer? Even the most savvy tech user can unknowingly download a virus and either become the victim of an identity stealing scam or, at best, lose all of their work.

The results of a virus being downloaded vary from slowing down your computer, deleting files or even blackmailing you by remotely locking your computer and demanding money from you to get your computer unlocked and files back.

Some viruses are ‘spyware’ which spy on what you are doing on your computer and steal your personal information such as credit card details, passwords and anything else you may want to keep private.   As soon as you go to purchase something online, the spyware will record your credit card details and pass them to the spyware’s developer. It is very popular to steal identity details such as your date of birth, address, schools attended etc and recreate your identify to commit fraud and other crimes.  You’ll only know about it when the Police come to visit or you receive some horrendous bill in the mail.

The other common annoying thing you may notice is your email inbox being bombarded with emails which appear to be random and you just can’t stop them.  This is most probably the result of a virus somewhere on your computer.

The solution is get some antivirus software installed as soon as possible which will stop 99 percent of viruses.  If you don’t know how to do it yourself – call your local computer guy who will be able to help.  Always keep your computer’s own software updated.  Software manufactures such as Microsoft regularly send out fixes to their products when new viruses are noticed.
